Matthew T. Silvey, LCSW
Licensed Clinical Social Worker
Matt joined the Personal Growth and Learning Center in early 2014. He specializes in treating adolescents and adults of all ages who struggle with mood disorders, anxiety, emotional disturbances, anger, relationship problems, and the effects of trauma (including PTSD). Matt utilizes an integrative approach, collaborating with patients to identify issues, build strengths, solve problems, and find peace. He believes strongly in the healing power of mindfulness- being in the present moment, on purpose, without judgment. Drawing on concepts from various clinical theories, Matt tailors an individualized experience for each patient. This includes treatment modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Interpersonal Psychotherapy.
Matt is certified to administer and interpret the adult and adolescent Substance Abuse Subtle Symptom Inventory (SASSI), and works to help individuals and families heal from the effects of addiction. He has extensive experience performing alcohol and drug assessments. Matt has written comprehensive psychosocial evaluations for the court system and has experience as a sentencing advocate.
Matt began his career working with seniors and adults with disabilities who received home healthcare services in rural East Tennessee. During graduate school, Matt worked with youth and adults whose lives were affected by poverty, addictions, mental illness, and contact with the criminal justice system. Later, as the Criminal Justice I Mental Health Liaison for Knox County, he worked to identify and intervene with adults living with severe and persistent mental illness who were cycling through the justice system. He is an experienced trainer and lecturer on the intersection of mental illness, addictions, and the criminal justice system. He has trained law enforcement officers, corrections staff, and community groups. Matt has lectured and presented workshops on the local, state, and national level.
In his free time, Matt freelances as a human jungle gym for his boys, does his best to be a good husband, and is otherwise mostly a chew toy for his dog. He enjoys listening to records, strumming various stringed instruments, and taking law school exams.
